TATE MODERN RESTAURANT

BANKSIDE

Almost at the top of the new addition to Tate Modern, the Switch House by famous swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, you will find the new restaurant. Simply called Tate Modern Restaurant.

The restaurant occupies most of the 9th floor, with views over the Thames, the old Tate Modern Building and St James Cathedral.

At the entrance you will find the bar, with tables and high chairs along the windows. When you turn the corner, there is a long passage with tables before you enter the huge main room.

It may strike you that the windows should been larger to get more of the views into the restaurant, but you can solve this by visiting the observation deck at the floor above, before or after your meal. The windows are large enough to flood light into the restaurant, but we see the point.

The interior is Scandinavian inspired with light wooden chairs and a light wooden floor.

The à la carte menu offers seasonal British food, mains like seabass, tart and chicken and beef from a Josper Grill.

In our series of the follow up to a dinner and a movie – the “Dinner and a Museum”, this is a great alternative. Combine dinner with some of the great exhibitions, the changing ones or many one of the great permanent, free ones. Fridays and Saturdays the restaurant is open from noon to 21.30. But be aware – the rest of the week it is only lunch at the moment, opening hours from noon to 15.30.
