LONDON EDITION, FITZROVIA
The London Edition is Ian Schrager's latest hotel project following the sale of Sanderson and St Martins Lane a few years back. The hotel has 173 rooms and suites and is part of the new Edition Hotels chain which is a cooperation between Schrager and Marriot Internationals. The deluxe suites located on the top floor have each their own terraces overlooking the London skyline. You may say the rooms have a masculine feel to them with wood panels, and not a bright colour or flower pattern in sight, but the soft linens and fake bedspread suggest that there has been maybe one lady involved in the design. The hotel has available an executive boardroom and large meeting rooms. (Press/click text for more)
When entering the Edition you are met by a combination two styles, the old traditional London architecture brought onto this century by the modern furniture. Beautiful old ceiling ornaments have been lovingly restored and mixed to contrast with a large egg shaped glass/mirror ball hanging from the ceiling in the large entrance and reception area. Here you get the feeling that Schrager has a sense of humour. As seen in St. Martins Lanes Gold teeth.
To the right of the reception is the hotel restaurant Berners Tavern. This is another of Michelin starred chef Jason Atherton's great restaurants. Here the vintage ceilings also has been restored, but painted in colours that brightens and softens the decor. The restaurants large dining room has a relaxed but sophisticated atmosphere. Together with Atherton's fantastic cuisine, the Berners Tavern has quickly become the place to do lunch, have tea, or dine after a movie première like Jolie and Pitt recently did.
